The Journey
Kala Sangama Kudla is one of the most respected professional Tulu drama troupes from Mangaluru, led by senior theatre artist, playwright and director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail, a figure widely credited, alongside a handful of pioneers, with shaping and modernising Tulu theatre. The troupe first rose to wide recognition with the legendary comedy Oriyardori Asal, penned by Kodialbail, whose punch dialogues became part of Tulu folklore and which later inspired the most successful Tulu film ever made, firmly establishing Kala Sangama as a household name across the Tulu coast. Building on that fame, the troupe went on to stage a long line of hit plays blending sharp humour with strong social and cultural themes. Its most celebrated production, Shivadoothe Gulige, again written and directed by Kodialbail, created history with a record breaking run of shows in Tulu theatre crossing hundreds of performances across India and abroad, and gave modern Tulu theatre an entirely new direction, moving beyond comedy into a powerful, immersive spectacle rooted story, brought alive through gripping performances, vibrant stage settings and striking use of sound. With these landmark works, Kodialbail and his Kala Sangama team have cemented their place among the most influential names in the history of Tulu drama.
